Start:Stop-The Conversion of St Paul

The Road to Damascus by Jonathan Peter Jackson

Hello and welcome to this week’s Start:Stop reflection from St Stephen Walbrook, when we stop for a few minutes and start to reflect on a passage from scripture. My name is Phillip Dawson.

This week the church celebrates the Conversion of St Paul - an event on the road to Damascus vividly described in the Acts of the Apostles. Paul’s own accounts of his experience appear, on the surface at least, to be less dramatic - but no less transformational. In his letter to the Galatians he explains that the revelation of the risen Christ caused him to reassess his response to three important questions:

Who am I?
Who is Jesus Christ? and;
How does Jesus Christ transform who I am?

Paul’s ministry to the Gentiles - inviting non-Jews to become followers of Christ, might be seen as a quest to help us all to explore the answers to these questions for ourselves.

Sermon - An un-miraculous miracle?

Miracle at Cana, collage, by the artist Diamond.

A sermon preached at St Stephen Walbrook on Thursday 20th January 2022 (Epiphany 2, Year C) based on readings from Isaiah 62.1-5 and John 2.1-11

Good News in 100 words
The gospel records few eye-witnesses to the miracle at Cana. On paper it seems a most un-miraculous miracle! Yet it’s a story that is part of the DNA of our lives, a story to which generations of people have added their own detail to fill in the gaps. That is our Epiphany. The seemingly unnoticed but life-changing revelation of Christ into our hearts, minds and bodies; whose miraculous love draws us ever closer to him and slowly transforms us from water into wine.

Prayers of Intercession - The Wedding at Cana

Miracle at Cana, Wilson Bigaud, 1951

Prayers written for The Second Sunday of Epiphany (Year C) based on readings from
Isaiah 62.1-5, 1 Corinthians 12.1-11 and John 2.1-11 and the text of The Marriage Service

Almighty God, you blessed the wedding at Cana with your presence
and bless all who have vowed to follow you.
By your Spirit, unite your church, that it might be a sign of your transforming love to all people.
We pray for our Bishops, Priests, Deacons and all who serve in your name;
for those preparing to make or renew vows of commitment and for those experiencing relationship difficulties.
We give thanks for the gifts of faith, hope and love.
May we use them to reveal a foretaste of the riches of your kingdom on earth.

Start:Stop - Thy Word

The opening of the Epistle to the Hebrews of the 1611 edition of the Authorized Version

Hello and welcome to this Start:Stop reflection from St Stephen Walbrook, when we stop for a few moments and start to reflect on a passage from scripture. My name is Phillip Dawson.

The sixteenth of January marks the anniversary of the death of Roger Fenton, a former Rector of St Stephen Walbrook who died in 1615. He was a member of the committee that produced the King James Version of the bible, responsible for translating the New Testament Epistles.

Our reading today is from one of these; Paul’s second letter to Timothy, the text taken from the King James Version:

Bible Reading 2 Timothy 3.14-17

But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Prayers of Intercession - The Epiphany

James Tissot, The Magi Journeying (Les rois mages en voyage), 1886-1894

Prayers of Intercession written for the celebration of the Feast of the Epiphany at St Stephen Walbrook on Thursday 6th January 2022, based on readings from Ephesians 3.1-12 and Matthew 2.1-12.

Almighty God, light of all grace and truth,
Guide us, your church, to bring the boundless riches of the Good News of Christ to every corner of the earth.
May the gift of your unending love, hidden in plain sight, be made known to us, in us and through us in all we think, say and do this day.
Grant boldness and confidence to all who minister in your name to follow the path you have set before us; so that, by faith, your eternal purpose may be revealed.

Lord in thy mercy
