Prayers of Intercession - Unity in the Spirit

Prayers of Intercession written for a special Sung Eucharist at St Stephen Walbrook on Thursday 9th July attended by members of the City Deanery and celebrated by the Bishop of London, marking the Feast of Pentecost.

Let us pray.

May the power of the Spirit set our hearts on fire with the love of the risen Christ. May that fire purify us, consuming all that which is contrary to His example, so that all we say, all we do and all we are may shine with His glory as lights in the world.

Lord, in your mercy

hear our prayer.

We pray for our Bishop Sarah and all the clergy and people of the churches of the Square Mile

that, inspired by the Holy Spirit, we might be united in proclaiming the Word of God’s saving love to the people of this City.

Help us to be good listeners; to discern familiar cadences and rhythms in the unfamiliar languages around us; to be enlivened and energized by what unites, rather than what divides.
Reignite our passion for the possible; reveal to us new ways to work together to share the Good News.

Lord, in your mercy

hear our prayer.

We pray for all those with influence and authority in this City and around the world.

Inspired by the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, may they act with integrity and serve the common good and may we do likewise.

May the gift of peace be known by all your people; help us to find security not in stockpiles of weapons but in Christ’s outstretched arms on the cross.

We pray for the cessation of hostility between Russia and Ukraine and for an end to war and violence in all places.

Lord, in your mercy

hear our prayer.

We pray for ourselves, our families, colleagues and the communities and networks which sustain us.

May the flames of the Spirit shine a light on our lives, that we may see more fully the consequences of our actions.

We ask for forgiveness for supporting unjust and unfair systems and structures. Save us from naval-gazing while the make-shift ships of our brothers and sisters capsize around us.

May the Spirit fill our mouths with words that speak only of the way, the truth and the life; and empower us to put these words into action.

Lord, in your mercy

hear our prayer.

We pray for all who are in particular need;  especially Melvyn, John, William, Shelley, Alexander and his family, Caroline, Francine, Carole, Peter and for Juliet and her family, Adrian, Jennifer and their family, Martin, Sam and Sophia, for Sally, for Tom, for Sarah, Kim and Mark, Jonathan, Anthony, Sue and their family.
May the presence of the Holy Spirit bring healing to those who are ill,

peace to those who are anxious and

strength to those who care for them.

Lord, in your mercy

hear our prayer

We pray for the faithful departed and those whose years mind falls at this time.

May the power of the Spirit, the Comforter, be known by all those who mourn.

Unite us in fellowship with all those who have gone before, as we journey towards fulfilment of our one true desire - thy kingdom come.

Merciful Father

accept these prayers

for the sake of your Son

our Saviour, Jesus Christ

Amen
