Reflection on Psalm 39

The Empty Tomb, Ghislaine Howard, 2000

A life tormented by a restless heart.
Is it burning in anger - or with love?
Which flames will fire my lips to speak?
How long must I endure?

Each of us is but a single stitch in a shroud.
But what lies beneath? A silhouette in riches?
Human-shaped, without substance;
a self-made definition.

Send moths to destroy it; attracted by the light in our hearts; the fire of your love.
You are our hope.
Give us strength to suffer the pain and tears.
We are part of the warp and weft of the grave-cloth of your Son.

Prayer

Gracious God, helps us as we struggle to shape our lives according to the image of your Son.
Help us to discern your will for us.
To know when to speak and when to listen.
Help us to realise that you love every fibre in the tapestry of your kingdom.
