Wedding Sermon - The Song of Divine Love

A sermon given at the marriage of Scott Westoby and Shani Cantor at St Giles-in-the-Fields on Thursday 26th September 2024. Scott manages The Phoenix Arts Club, a drag and cabaret bar next to the church. Shani is a fantastic performer and sings at the club as well as in numerous productions on the West End stage. The marriage service ended with a procession behind a band down Denmark Street. The sermon draws on lyrics from songs recorded, demoed or written in Demark Street – the UK’s version of Tin Pan Alley, which is next to the church.

Prayers of Intercession - The Wedding at Cana

Miracle at Cana, Wilson Bigaud, 1951

Prayers written for The Second Sunday of Epiphany (Year C) based on readings from
Isaiah 62.1-5, 1 Corinthians 12.1-11 and John 2.1-11 and the text of The Marriage Service

Almighty God, you blessed the wedding at Cana with your presence
and bless all who have vowed to follow you.
By your Spirit, unite your church, that it might be a sign of your transforming love to all people.
We pray for our Bishops, Priests, Deacons and all who serve in your name;
for those preparing to make or renew vows of commitment and for those experiencing relationship difficulties.
We give thanks for the gifts of faith, hope and love.
May we use them to reveal a foretaste of the riches of your kingdom on earth.

BOOK REVIEW - A Grief Observed by C.S.Lewis

A Grief Observed by C.S.Lewis (First published 1961)

In the 1994 introduction to this book written in 1960 and originally published under a pseudonym, Douglas H Gresham, the step-son of C.S.Lewis, issues a note of caution. He explains that this is a description of the grief experienced by C.S.Lewis following the death of his wife. The title “A” Grief is therefore important - this is a personal account - not an attempt to define - or explain - grief universally. Despite this, I recognised much of what Lewis describes, either from my own (limited) experience of bereavement, or from what other people have told me about theirs.
