Announcement - New Rector of St Olave Hart Street

From The Churchwardens of the Parsish of St Olave Hart Street and All Hallows Staining with St Catherine Coleman, City of London:

We are delighted to announce that The Reverend Phillip Dawson has been appointed as the next Rector of St Olave Hart Street. A service of institution and induction will take place on 8th January 2026 at 6pm.

Phillip is currently serving as Curate at St Giles-in-the-Fields and as Honorary Assistant Priest at St George’s Bloomsbury. He is also Honorary Chaplain to the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and regularly assists at a number of churches in the Square Mile. He trained for ordained ministry at St Augustine’s College of Theology while working full time and was recently awarded an MPhil in World Christianities from the University of Cambridge. As an ordinand, Phillip served at St Stephen Walbrook, supporting a vibrant and growing ministry to those working in and visiting the City of London.

Before ordination, Phillip was a director of companies in the architecture, planning and construction sectors for over twenty years. He also held roles as a Non-Executive Director and Board Member of schools, charities, and housing associations. He has a passion for choral music and a particular interest in spirituality, health & wellbeing.

Reflecting on his appointment, Phillip said:

“St Olave Hart Street has been described as a country church amidst the busyness of the City. It is dedicated to a saint who was a Viking warrior and is known as a place of healing and sanctuary. With a long history tied to the City’s mercantile and maritime past, deep-rooted connections to City and Livery companies and a commitment to serving the needs of this modern, dynamic City through worship, loving service, music, art and culture, St Olave’s is a place where life in all its gloriously complex diversity is celebrated. A faithful community that genuinely welcomes all and where everyone can feel at home among friends on the same journey - becoming the person God made us to be. Whether you live, work, or are visiting this wonderful corner of the Square Mile, you are always invited to St Olave’s to come and see!”

Tom Barclay Matchett, a member of the Patronage Trust, said:

“We are excited to welcome Phillip as our new Rector and to starting a new chapter in the continuing story of this parish. Inspired by the cry of St Olaf we look forward to all that lies ahead as we journey together as ‘people of Christ, people of the cross.’”

The Bishop of London, The Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullaly said:

“Phillip has demonstrated a gift for building relationships and ministering to those who live, work in and visit the City, helping to inspire and grow communities of faithful loving service. I look forward to seeing his ministry at St Olave Hart Street flourish.”

Phillip has been among the priests helping to officiate services during the interregnum and we are delighted that he will continue to do so until his formal induction. We look forward to welcoming Phillip and his partner, Henry, to St Olave Hart Street in the new year.
