BOOK REVIEW : Meeting God in Mark by Rowan Williams

A short and rich guide to a short and rich gospel! Rowan Williams explains that the purpose of this book is to “offer suggestions for a slow reading of what notoriously feels like a rushed and packed text" and we used it accordingly, over a six week study group at St Stephen Walbrook this autumn. For those looking for a more formal structure and reading guide, the appendix contains questions for group discussion around the themes covered in each chapter and a weekly reading guide, followed by a short reflection.

Advent Quiet Hour - Week 1

Light of the World, William Holman Hunt
The season of Advent has been set aside as a time of preparation for Christmas since at least the last half of the sixth century. Advent comes from the Latin word adventus meaning “coming.” Advent begins the church year, starting four Sundays before Christmas. Advent is a time for self-examination and asking for forgiveness as the church prepares to celebrate the incarnation of God at Christmas.

Take time out during your commute to work to spend a few moments in stillness and prayer during our Advent Quiet Hour on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8am-9am. The readings, prayers, poems and practices in this leaflet may be helpful. Please take this sheet away with you.

Start:Stop-Thy Kingdom Come

Searching for God - Almighty Hands by Nic Fiddian Green at Southwark Cathedral

Good morning and thank you for joining us for Start:Stop. This reflection will last around ten minutes - please feel free to come and go as your schedule dictates.

Between Ascension Day and Pentecost the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have invited Christians around the world to join together to pray that more people may come to know Jesus. In our reading this morning we hear the teaching of Jesus concerning prayer. If you’d like to follow along it’s on page six of the New Testament.
