Prayers of Intercession - The Word of the Lord

Lessons of Hearing, Laura Makabresku, 2021

Prayers of Intercession written for the Choral Eucharist at St Stephen Walbrook on Thursday 27th October 2022 (Year C, Last after Trinity, Bible Sunday) based on readings from Romans 15.1-6 and Luke 4.16-24

Let us pray to God our Father, whose Word is a lamp to our feet and a light unto our path. ~

Almighty God, we give thanks for the gift of your Word, fulfilled in your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ and, by your Spirit, revealed through scripture and sacrament.
We ask for your blessing on all those who proclaim your Word.
We pray for the church, missionaries and all who minister in your name and especially those who share your Good News at risk to their own lives.
Help us to glorify you by speaking together with one voice, in your language of love.

Lord in thy mercy
Hear our prayer

Loving God, we ask for your forgiveness for the times when we we have used words that speak not of your mercy, justice or peace.
Help us to respond graciously when we do not agree with the words used by others; turn our judgement into curiosity; help us to become messengers of your peace.
Bless all who hold positions of authority and influence and all seeking to bring an end to violence and hostility through dialogue.
We pray for relief from suffering for the victims of war, especially at this time the people of Ukraine.

Lord in thy mercy
Hear our prayer

Generous God, who spoke this world into being and filled it with goodness,
Transform us by the power of your word, so that we might live in harmony with one another and with your creation;
bringing Good News to the poor, proclaiming release to the captives and setting the oppressed free.
Open our eyes to the reality of your Word; may it become the script for our lives.

Lord in thy mercy,
Hear our prayer.

Living God, whose Son restored to health the sick and suffering through the power of his healing word;
we bring before you all those who desperately need to hear words of hope and comfort this day.
We remember especially John, Melvyn, Carole, Peter, Francine, Sue, Ann, Dorothy, Sam, Martin, Sophia, Jonathan and his family and Juliette and her family and for all those whose names are written on our hearts.

Lord in thy mercy
Hear our prayer

Eternal God, welcome into your kingdom all your obedient servants who have spoken their last words in this life.
As we await the day when we might become one with them and you, may we honour their faithfulness by working each day as messengers of your Word here on earth.

With St Stephen and all the saints, we pray;

Merciful Father,
accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour, Jesus Christ,
Amen
