Morning Prayer - God of love, mighty river

The Malestrom. Bodo. David Hockney, 2002

“Let the rivers clap their hands and let the hills ring out together before the Lord”
(Psalm 98, verse 8)

Inspired by this verse from one of the Psalms appointed for the morning of October 19th 2020, I thought I would lead our online service of Morning Prayer from beside the River Thames, which is a short walk from our flat. These prayers are inspired by and adapted from prayers written by Chandran Devanesan and St Gertrude the Great.

The response to : God of love, mighty river is : flow over us, within us and through us.

God of love, mighty river,

flow over us, within us and through us.

We begin this day in the knowledge that we are your children and are beloved.

Surround us with the waters of our baptism, a river of mercy, source of life and love.

May this river bring hope to us in our deserts of despair and refreshment from the long droughts of the mind.

May the gift of your unfailing love, by your grace, continually sustain us.

God of love, mighty river,

flow over us, within us and through us.

God of love, mighty river, cleanse us; purify the channels of our lives.

Help us to see ourselves and each other as streams flowing from one river;

We pray for peace on earth; an end to violence and conflict.

Grant wisdom to the Queen, her Government and all in positions of responsibility.

May your mighty river drive the wheels of decision making; so that justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

God of love, mighty river,

flow over us, within us and through us.

God of love, mighty river, may the current of your healing waters direct the flow of our lives.

We pray for all those known to us in need; the sick, the poor, the distressed. All affected by the coronavirus.

Guide us to them, in your service; strengthened by the reflected image of your Son.

God of love, mighty river,

flow over us, within us and through us.

God of love, mighty river, bear us down to the ocean, the ocean of your love.

We give thanks for the fellowship of our College, our churches and the communities to which we belong.

Help us to draw water from the deep wells of your kindness when we cannot follow the flowing streams that connect us.

Nourish our faith until we are united with you and all the company of heaven, in your ineffable sea of love.

God of love, mighty river,

flow over us, within us and through us.

The River of Life, William Blake, c1805
