A Beacon of Thy Charity - A Grace for the Trinity House Civic Lunch on Trafalgar Day 2026

Anton Melbye, The Eddystone Lighthouse, 1846

A grace offered before the Civic Lunch at Trinity House on Wednesday 21st October 2026. The prayer begins with an invocation of the Holy Trinity, recalling the motto of Trinity House and ends with a reference to the motto of the City of London Corporation. It incorporates a reminder of the anniversary of the reopening of the present building on Trafalgar Day 1953, an echo of the traditional toast offered to Nelson’s ‘Immortal Memory’ on this day and the words of his flag signal before the battle.

Most blessed Trinity,
We lift our hearts to Thee,

with grateful thanks for this bounty
served with gracious hospitality,
As we mark the anniversary
Of this House restored to beauty.

And honour, too, the memory
Of those who lost their lives at sea
And, as expected, fulfil our duty
To serve with generosity,
In fellowship with brethren on land and sea.

Lord, direct us, that we may be
a beacon of thy charity.

Amen.
